One of the activites I am involved in is selling books second hand through the mail. Should you do this watch out.

I've been doing this for over a year now and so far have had two complaints of books not arriving. They both came from this man. The first time he dropped the complaint. We'll see what he does this time. Should anyone really care, aside from that I have a 4.9 out of five star rating based on the fourteen folks who left feedback on my services. (I do try and do a good job.)

So here's the man who says I did not send him books (twice). He is the only man anywhere who has ever claimed I did not send him books. I do not know why he orders books and then claims he does not receive them. Fortunately, however, this a problem that seems to be unique to him.

Bruce Sardinia, age 51 or 52

He is involved with a company called
Southern Book Services

or Southern Book Warehouse

or Book Warehouse

The orders use this address.

SBS
4360 NW 135TH ST
OPA LOCKA, FLORIDA 33054-4418

This is his phone number:
(305) 681-3424

This is his e-mail address:
bookloads@bellsouth.net (although he used a different one last time.)

[NOTE ADDED ON MORNING OF 1-26-10: I admit when I put this up I wondered if it was an over-reaction. However, since then this blog has started getting hits on this bookstore and its address at about a rate of one search every two days. It's a shame.]

Well gee, look what I found here. At least I know, I'm not over-reacting :

I have the same experience. He "Dave" uses the same wording. Here is my postings...

02/18/09 Not Delivered: When will it arrive? Edit
No it has not! Okay! Feb 12th was 6 days ago! Okay! If is was shipped on Jan 12th (30 days ago) it would have gotten here by now. Okay! So give me my refund! Okay! You need to contact the USPS and have them track it. What am I supposed to do? Wait til President Obama is running for re-election? If it does show up (I doubt it) I will return it unopened.

02/18/09 (Customer Support Reply)
Sorry for this delay in delivery.
Please notice the ship date in red above. This is 100% accurate.
The shipping label was printed as:
Jerry Hutchins
P.O. BOX 84899
SAN DIEGO, CA, 92138, United States

Please take another look for this, as it should have arrived by now.
If not, please allow a little more time as most mail - even lost mail - eventually arrives.
If its returned to us for any reason, we will immediatly let you know.
Sorry again for this delay in delivery, but I assure you that the above shipping data is correct.
Please keep in mind that you will get delivery or get a refund - that is our guarantee and promise!
Thank you for working with us and sorry again for this problem,
Thanks, Dave

02/16/09 Not Delivered: When will it arrive? Edit
You can't do that! You say that it will get here on the 12th it is not here! So I want a refund! If someday it gets here I will send it back. I have purchased many books from Amazon vendors and this is the worst experience. I am neve buying anythng fro you ever!

02/15/09 (Customer Support Reply)
You may return anything at any time. We will post a refund within a day of receiving it, but the mail can be very slow, so please allow lots of time for the slow mail to arrive, and then we will post the refund.
If its being returned due to no fault of ours then we have to deduct the postage charges that we already used.
So we refund the full amount less the shipping/handling fees charged by AmazonUS.
This is the return address:
Book sales, 18520 NW 67th Ave, Suite #140 Miami, Fl 33015.
Thanks for you understanding that we cant refund till it arrives, and the mail can be quite slow.
Thanks, Dave

02/13/09 Not Delivered: When will it arrive? Edit
Well it is the 12th and no product. So I would like a refund on this order. I would like it to get it refunded back to my Amazon account since I bought it using a coupon. I will notify Amazon that I want a refund because I never got the product.

02/09/09 (Customer Support Reply)
Sorry for any slowness in delivery by the USPS. The mail can be slow, but we do everyting we can to hurry along your order.
Please notice the red text above as it does give accurate shipping and ETA details.
Please also notice the shipping address above as its what was printed on the shipping lable.
Please keep in mind that you will get delivery or get a refund - that is our guarantee and promise!
Thank you for working with us and sorry again for this problem,
Thanks, Dave

02/07/09 Not Delivered: When will it arrive? Edit
It is the 6th and I still have not received it. I think you should either send another one or refund my money throught Amazon.com. Let me know so that I can notifiy Amazon.com myself.

Jerry

  1. This same thing just happened to me. I have found at least three or four other complaints. I just called Amazon to file a report. We should ban together and have the police raid that place.

    1. Hello,
I have been scammed by the same man a couple of years ago under different name same address, now I have just been caught again - same scam - claiming book has not arrived etc. So he is still operating and Abe Books and Amazon seem disinterested. How did you get on trying to solve this problem?

      Delete
  2. I agree. When I first posted this I wondered if I was over-reacting. but this post gets at least three hits a week. These people are quite active at reporting missing books. I do hope others will band together and we can help each other do something about it.

  4. just happened to me too. I filed a complaint with half.com, and just filled out a mail fraud complaint, as he's using the USPS to commit fraud. You can fill out a complaint online at : https://www.uspsoig.gov/hotlinenewforms.cfm

you can also report it over the phone at 1-800-545-9857

  5. I sent the letter below to Amazon:
Well, I thought I was pleased [with how Amazon handled my complaint] until I found so many other booksellers with a similar experience. See the letter below that I will add to the other complaints. I thought better of Amazon and am greatly disappointed in you!

In December I mailed a book to SBS. After a week or so I received an email from them saying they didn't receive it and did I use delivery confirmation. I wrote that I did and gave them the number and also the time the post office said it was delivered. I was pretty new at this and worried about bad feedback so emailed them several days later to ask if they got it yet. I wrote to them atleast 4 more emails each time saying perhaps someone in the office got it and misplaced it. I didn't want to accuse them of anything so each email gave them the opportunity to say it was there, had been misplaced and thank you. They never answered which was odd. Had they really not received it I would assume they'd want their money back or at least given negative feedback. Now, when I see all the others who have had similar problems I am truly upset and wonder why Amazon hasn't fixed this problem. I am aware of Southern Book Service, which has the same address, as being a wholesale book supplier and someone I have dealt with for many years when I owned a book store.

I absolutely do not understand why Amazon didn't know about these problems when I spoke to them today.

  7. At this point, this page has, sadly, become my most read page on this blog. My complaints to Amazon have done nothing. Personally, if anyone who even looks like they might be these people orders from me, I refuse to send it and issue a refund and advise the customer to complain to Amazon about it if they feel it is unjust.

In the meantime, it might be nice if some of the people who come here took the time to skim a few pages and learn a little bit about the other subjects covered. --mostly how to assist Burmese refugees in various ways.

  28. I just got three orders from this guy (Bookloads) for the same item, within one week's time. I shipped the first item immediately. The second two orders came through this morning, but I have not shipped them. These items are around $25 each.

What confuses me, however, is that he has a 100% feedback rating on half.com from around 14,500 people. What's going on here?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you for posting this. Same situation as all the others, $80 book sold at half.com. I canceled and said it was not available. I added "bookloads" to my blocked buyers list. I also am curious how he has good feedback on ebay/half.com? The best we can do is inform others and let them know he is still active and defrauding others!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just got an order from this guy as well. Canceled it. Thanks for the post!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The reason a buyer's feedback always looks great on Half.com is because the site is owned by eBay and eBay does not allow a seller to leave negative feedback for the buyer. The actual feedback "color" HAS to be green (positive) Red (negative) or gray (neutral) is programmed to be impossible to leave, only a BUYER has the ability to leave a negative or neutral rating.

Sellers are encouraged to "jump in first" with feedback and many do this unthinkingly as an attempt to gain goodwill from their buyers.

If you want to know whether a buyer on eBay or Half is a problem or not, the only real tool in the toolbox is to click on to "feedback left for others". There often something close to the true story can be seen in the disproportionate amount of negative ratings left for their sellers...

  41. I just checked my order history and found I've had 6 orders from this company in the last 4 years. I haven't had any problems, but I HATE Anybook on Amazon - I don't approve of drop shippers, and they rip off customers by charging outrageous prices for books that can be found reasonably priced just about anywhere. I just added "bookloader" to my Blocked Bidder List on eBay, so at least they can't buy from me through Half. I wish Amazon had a similar capability.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you! For taking time to create this blog. I too thought SBS Half's name was strange and googled it - finding this blog. I don't have $50 to give away. I canceled the order on half.com and saved myself the trouble!

  44. BTW: This guy also goes by the name bookloads. He scammed me last year at this time. He said a BRAND New book arrived with water damage. After having read this blog, I'm certain I was scammed now. No Dice. DO NOT SELL TO BOOKLOADS OR SBC HALF in Opa Locka, FL.

  52. Thank you for this blog post! Same story as the others on here - googled SBS Half and his fraud became very apparent. I canceled the order 15 minutes after receiving it and added his account to my block list. I've lost some faith in eBay/Half.com after this experience. If you go to bookloads account, his feedback left for others is a dead giveaway. Probably around 90% of his complaints are that he never gets the book. It's very clear that it's happening WAY more than it should be. Not only do eBay/Half.com NEED to do something about this, but the Florida police should look into prosecuting him for mail fraud. He's a criminal.

  57. Thanks for the heads up. I was excited to make my first book sale on half.com, but I was a little concerned when I saw all of the negative feedback left by the buyer for other sellers. The question is: should I just ignore him?? Or any ideas on what I should write back?

    "Comment/ Question: Dear Vendor,

Thank you for my order. Unfortunately at this time I would like to return

  62. I have no idea what to do. I suggest you try to find an expert or someone more experienced than me. I would begin by asking myself "Who knows about mail fraud?" and then I'd probably contact the post office. I'd also worry about identity theft. And, I'd read everything I could find at Amazon about how to accept returns and their policies. Maybe when you understand their policies better you can see a "loophole" in the system he is going to use to cheat you somehow.

    Sorry I can't help better.

    ReplyDelete
  63. No worries- I was just going to ignore him for the hell of it and see what happens. This is a half.com purchase - will be interesting to see if he brings it up to the half.com representatives...

Also, I have not even left him a review yet, which gives me some (but obviously not much) leverage. I was thinking of writing the truth and perhaps even including a link to this blog in the review (if anything bad happens).

Just want to bounce some ideas - let me know if any of the above sounds too outrageous

Thanks so much for your response anyway!

  64. Thank you for the heads-up. I really appreciate it. I cancelled, issued a full refund, as well as blocked and reported "bookloads" to half.com. This is nerve-wracking. I hope he gets caught.

  65. I just wrote the previous comment. His Half.com name was "bookloads" but the addressee for delivery was SBS HALF in Opa Locka, FL. I googled SBS HALF and found this blog. Again, thank you.

  66. I received an email from Half.com telling me that I sold a book to bookloads at the Opa Locka address. I'm just not going to ship the book. I contacted Half.com (eBay) support and let them know that I wouldn't be shipping the book. I'll see what they say. I will issue a refund if I receive the funds. I'll post an update...

    1. This is Peter Huston, owner of this blog. Although I don't condone the actions of this bookdealer, I do think it crosses a line when women's addresses are posted without explanation. (As has just been done here.) The intent, it seems, is to frighten, threaten and intimidate. If someone would like to post an explanation of who this person is (her last name is Sardinas) along with her relevance to this situation, I might allow that, but in the meantime I am removing this post.

  74. I'm a new Amazon seller, and sold a used (near perfect) textbook to a Mary Buchanan. Just before the 30 refund period ended, I received an email requesting a refund. When I asked for specifics (dropping class, etc.), only response was "no longer needed". No problem I said, just return the copy to me. A week later I get a very poor condition copy of the textbook, not the one I sent. I google the address and discover that "Mary" is really Southern Book Service. No refund will be given. My feeling is that they were trying to take advantage of me as a new Amazon seller. New, but not naive!

  75. i also almost got scammed by "mary buchanan" who ordered from the anybook address in opa locka florida. she bought a $175 book and then, right before the 30 day period was up, she requested a return. about a week later, she made the claim that the item had been damaged in the mail. i got very angry and she said "she wasnt trying to rip me off of my hard earned money but that she had shipped my book to her customer and they had decided not to keep it". it was a test review book and they had used it for almost a full month. so it arrived to her damaged and yet she kept it for 30 days without making that claim and even shipped it on to another person???? anyway she admiteed that claim was a lie and then filed a a to z claim against me. she returned the book 7 weeks after receiving it and i refunded less a 20% restocking fee and a 10% wear and tear fee. im glad it was a used book though, if it had been a new book and she had made a "not as described" claim i probably would have lost money to anybook. i had previously stopped doing business with sbs books but they opened up with "mary buchanan" account to scam me again. one of the things these scammers do is advertise new books that they dont have at very high prices and them send USED books which is outrighht LEGAL FRAUD. this practice would also account for the returns they do, a customer expects a new book, anybook sends a used one, they offer a discount, but if the customer doesnt want that they take the book back, charge a restocking and return it to the original seller. screw these scammer and amazon cuz they are scammers for allowing this shit to go on

  76. Thanks, this blog confirmed my suspicions. I initiated a full refund. It's so obvious this guy is scam. Also, check out half.com's refund explanation. It's pretty poor. I am considering selling my books through another website in the future.

  77. I, to, have been led this page upon selling my textbook from half.com. I usually don't google names, but the name I was going to ship to, "SBS HALF", looked fishy. I'm glad I came across this website to find out he's a scammer. I am now canceling this half.com transaction and will be reporting this buyer by the name of, "bookloads", to half.com.

Thank you Peter Huston for starting this blogsite! I am now so glad I researched this. We need to report this individual to prevent him from scamming more innocent people!!!

I doubt Half.com will do much since they are too laid back and this person can change identity and use a new screenname or new mailing address to cover his tracks and repeat his illegal activities.

Report him to Opa Locka police department.

  78. Mary Buchanan seems to be at it again. "She" ordered a relatively inexpensive ($12) book,, but it was returned with an "incomplete address." I wrote ant told her, but I was told to ship it again--to the same address. After reading all of the above, I decided to eat the shipping charge and just authorize a full refund. Better that than to ship it again, then have her ask for another full refund because it "didn't arrive" or get a trashed book sent back after it has been used.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thanks to everyone for this blog, fortunately I saw all your comments before I shipped the book. So I cancelled the order and then reported the incident to Amazon. It is unbelievable that this has been going on so long. I would think the Post Office would be all over these guys for defrauding people.

    1. I shipped a $30 book to 'Mary Buchanan' on 10/31/15. Unfortunately, I was unaware of any of this scamming until 2 weeks later when 'she' sent me an hysterical email saying she hadn't received the book. That's when I started researching the whole matter. Long story short, after many communications with Amazon, they are sucking the money out of my account to refund to the bloodsucker 'Mary Buchanan' at SBS, Southern Book Service, in Opa Locka. Apparently, Jeff Bezos has no company ethic and refuses to stand up for the very people who make him money.

  81. Unfortunately I did not see this before I shipped a book Mary Buchanan bought from me on amazon. I got suspicious when I received an email from them asking what my return policy was. In fact the email was word for word of the one mentioned in a comment above. I sent back asking why they wanted to return it. I am awaiting a response. I recommend that anyone who has been scammed by them files a complaint with the Florida AGs Office. http://myfloridalegal.com/pages.nsf/Main/030e31f06ef0184d85256cc600706904

  82. I called Amazon and filed a Buyer Abuse complaint against "Mary Buchanan" after feeling suspicious following a stream of strangely aggressive correspondence from her. I found three copies of the book she ordered from me in Anybook's Amazon store, all for more than 3x what I listed my copy for. I suspect "Mary Buchanan" or SBS makes a business of buying up all the copies of out of print books, therefore having a monopoly on the title and setting high prices.

Amazon probably doesn't care as all the sales and resales generate more dollars for Amazon.

I'm disgusted with Amazon and will be pulling my inventory. This doesn't seem legal and I feel is deserving of a lawsuit.

  86. And me to the list! Sent a $150 book to Mary Buchanan. "She" is now asking where the book is. tracking shows it was "out for delivery" on the 16th of April but no "delivery"... I was trying to help "her" but was getting no response to my request that she check her local post office so I tried to google her thinking I would call... found this blog. Livid that Amazon allows this. The package was insured so I can file a claim but I am sure they have it! started an investigation with the PO. Not sure what else I can do since technically I have no proof they have the book...

I am so glad you still have this post up and for all the comments. First ever that I've run across this. I'm just trying to sell off my kids' college books. Makes me mad that someone is scamming people to make money. Awhile back I had someone ask for a refund before they received the book and I said refund when I get the book back as I had just mailed it that day! She couldn't claim nondelivery because I hadn't mailed it when she sent the request (I was actually at the P.O.! lol) I told her to follow Amazaon's rules for requesting returns which she never did. I guess she thought I'd refund her because she sent me an email. BUT this address looked suspicious. So glad I checked. My kid just got out of the hospital and I don't have time to do this today anyway and to realize it's for a scammer makes me mad!

  98. 1 - You will need 2-million hits before anyone takes notice of a blog post I'm afraid!

2 - Why don't you all get together and play them at their own game, one book each, order, claim it hasn't arrived, full refund - If Amazon has to give them 100 negs in a week, it may well stop them trading?

3 - Class action but against Amazon for continuing to facilitate, rather than the crooks; who will just light-out!

  104. SBS is a scam company. Ordered twice from me (an Amazon book seller) and both times requested a return right before the 30 days. Not sure what is up with this company. The first book I received back may have not been the one I sent to them...I will check the 2nd one very carefully to be sure it is the same new text and not some used book SBS swapped out for my new one.

  107. This past month Mary Buchanan alias MBS ordered two books from me, each costing $200. Upon receiving both of them, MBS requested a refund from Amazon stating the books were not as described. I'm the author of the books and the books are definitely as described. I asked for further clarification from MBS. MBS failed to reply to any of my emails. I have yet to receive the merchandise back.
